For centuries, forts, bunkers, fortifications and defensive lines have safeguarded our country. Together, they form the Netherlands’ defence heritage. On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April 2026, hundreds of fascinating structures will be open to the public during the National Defence Heritage Weekend. From Den Helder to Maastricht, there is plenty to see and do. Discover the defensive lines in our own country, including even UNESCO World Heritage sites!

Our visitor centre will be open on Saturday 18 April from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is (as always) free, although a small donation would be much appreciated. An amateur radio operator will be on hand to give demonstrations.

Guided cycling tour

On that day, we are organising the first guided bike tour around the former airfield. Prudent Staal will once again be our guide this year. Along the way, he will talk about the visible traces of the Second World War and the airfield’s history. There is a limit of 15 cyclists to prevent dangerous traffic situations. The ride takes about 2 hours and costs €5 per person. This year’s cycle dates are: 18 April, 16 May, 13 June, 18 July, 8 August and 19 September. Sign up by sending an email to historie@vliegveldvalkenburg.nl. Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
